Key Experiences

From being cast as a lawyer to being a lawyer!
Before I really understood what the role of a legal professional entailed, I played the part of a cross-examining lawyer in a childhood play. While, my current role is a far cry from the criminal courts, many of the key attractions – fast-pace, intellectually stimulating, creative – still remain.

Having done a law degree and been a part of the law society committee, I was quite familiar with firm names and nuances by the time I was a finalist. Instead, I had spent a lot of my university summers interning in other sectors including investment banking, private equity and hospitality and seeing the impact that lawyers' work had on the ground. When I then came to apply for vacation schemes in my final year, I had additional insight of how legal advice was given to and received by clients.

TMT has a very high level of client interaction and we often find ourselves working with business leads in addition to in-house legal counsel. My past experience as part of the "the business" has been invaluable.

Current Position

Tackling cutting-edge issues in technology, media and telecoms!
I have joined our award winning technology, media and telecoms (TMT) group as a newly qualified solicitor. Few other industry sectors are as fluid, and few have the capacity to change businesses – or indeed society – as quickly or profoundly. The last few years have seen waves of disruptive technologies emerging, and that will continue. I have been working with a business across the globe from a range of sectors to provide practical solutions.

Main Motivations

Breadth of international exposure
One of the key elements that attracted me to HSF back in 2016 was its emphasis on international exposure. As a trainee, I was lucky enough to undertake a six month secondment in our Singapore office working across Asia on mainly TMT-related disputes. It was great to get to know the team there and experience many of the same underlying HSF values half way across the world.

This has not stopped as an Associate. I am currently working with clients in Europe, the Middle East and the US and expect this list to only get longer.

Top Advice

Take a risk and go after what interests you
One of the biggest risks in an individual's career is self-selecting out of opportunities because you feel too junior, too busy or too inexperienced. Some of my most valuable experiences in my life have come from saying "yes" which has got me on TV, meeting royalty and a seat at the Olympics! In the context of HSF, I am increasingly involved in the team that delivers free, expert legal advice to the Government of Sierra Leone to support the management of growing volumes of foreign direct investment.

Greatest Achievement

Closing a major deal and going white water rafting to celebrate
I joined a high-performing deal team a month before closing. There was a lot of industry-specific jargon to digest and work to be done (which unfortunately meant some long hours). However, HSF was really embedded in the client team and it speaks to the strength of the relationship that the non-traditional deal celebration was white water rafting!
